Location Policy

Last updated: September 12, 2026

This policy explains how TripDex uses location (GPS) data specifically — read alongside our Privacy Policy for the full picture.

When location is collected. When you scan a place using your camera, the app captures your device's current GPS coordinates to identify and verify the place. When you scan a photo imported from your gallery, we instead try to read GPS coordinates embedded in that photo's own metadata (EXIF), if present, rather than your current position.

No background tracking. TripDex does not track your location in the background or outside the moment of a scan. We only request "while using the app" location access, never "always" access.

What happens if you don't save the scan. If you scan a place but don't save the resulting discovery, the GPS coordinates used for that scan are sent to our AI provider (Google Gemini) and to OpenStreetMap as part of identifying the place, but are never written to our own database.

What happens if you save it. Once you save a discovery, its GPS coordinates are stored and used to place it on your personal world map.

Public visibility. If you publish that discovery to the feed, its exact GPS coordinates become visible to whoever can see the post — everyone, if your account is public, or your accepted followers, if it's private. Publishing a discovery means sharing precisely where it was taken, not just an approximate area. Before publishing, consider whether the location shown could reveal your home, workplace, or another place you'd rather keep private.

Who processes this data. Beyond our own infrastructure (Supabase, EU-hosted), your GPS coordinates are shared with Google (Gemini), for place identification, and with OpenStreetMap, for confirming nearby place names.

How this could change. We do not currently use your location history to profile your movement habits, use it for advertising, or sell it. If this changes in the future, we will update this policy in advance and, where required by applicable law, ask for your consent before doing so.

Control and revocation. You can revoke location access at any time from your device settings or the app's Permissions settings. Without location access, scanning will be limited (you can still import a photo with embedded GPS metadata).

Retention and deletion. Location data tied to a discovery is kept for as long as that discovery and your account exist. It's deleted when you delete the discovery or your account.

Your rights. The same rights described in our Privacy Policy apply to your location data.
